5 Transnational democratic remittances: Content and channels of diffusion1

DOI: 10.4324/9781003092308-5

As was demonstrated in the previous chapter, numerous individual and collective Russian actors across Europe have been engaged in democratic remitting. This chapter examines the scope, content and direct and indirect channels of transmission of these democratic remittances. Democracy, as discussed in Chapter 1, is understood here in a sense that goes well beyond elections or a political system. Transition from an authoritarian regime to a fully-fledged democracy undoubtedly requires changes in various spheres of political and public life. As Anastasia Sergeeva, one of the organization of a civil society initiative in Warsaw, explains,

If we want to see a democratic Russia, we understand this is not a question of Putin, but a question of people and whether they are ready to do things to change the country and the relations within the society. Ultimately, people find it more comfortable to live in an honest and fair environment, an environment of respect. That is why it is important to create such an environment even at times when it seems completely crazy. (Sergeeva 2015)
